End Climate Cowardice
FOR WEBSITE 2018-08-20 #BrownsLastChance - Ryan Sin 4.jpg

Throughout his most recent term, Governor Brown has ignored taxpayer-funded studies which show that oil drilling is toxic, and has refused to walk his own climate talk. During this time, we delivered over 500 hundred thousand petitions, rallied regularly at the capitol - and around the state, held numerous press conferences, hosted several health forums showing toxicity from drilling, and consistently reminded the governor that the majority of Californians and the science DO NOT favor fracking and dangerous drilling.  Still, instead of standing with the people and the science, and taking on California’s powerful oil and gas industry to curb its expansion and most dangerous practices, Governor Brown has instead cultivated close ties to big oil and has taken its money, and cut industry-friendly deals around critical policy and regulatory issues.

For the sake of the climate, and to protect our communities, it’s time to say, “Enough!”.

That’s because we’ve done everything legally possible to let the governor know he’s way out of step with the science and public opinion.  Instead of meeting with us and listening to our concerns, he’s ignored us.

No more!  It’s time to escalate and make sure Gov. Brown gets the message.  Join us on September 13th!

Mass Action To End Jerry Brown’s Climate Cowardice

Date: Thursday, Sept. 13th, 2018
Time: Arrive By 7:00 a.m.
Location: Jessie Square, 736 Mission St., San Francisco 94103

Why? Because there is nothing normal about the situation we are in right now. There is nothing normal about daily wildfires in California, and record heat waves worldwide.  It is not normal, or healthy, to have a toxic oil well in your backyard, or a fracking operation near our children’s schools. Now is a time of reckoning; Governor Jerry Brown wants to be remembered as a climate leader, but the reality is he has failed the test of real leadership. You simply cannot stand with communities, public health, and the climate and side with big oil industry polluters.  Which side is he on?

Join us as we nonviolently confront Jerry Brown and force him to answer this question once and for all.

Specifically, we are calling on Jerry Brown to:

  1. Stop issuing new permits for oil drilling in California, and begin a just and equitable transition to 100% renewable energy.

  2. Commit California to a managed decline of fossil fuel production, starting with 2,500 foot setback limits to protect frontlines communities from toxic oil and gas drilling.

Will you join us on September 13th in San Francisco to take nonviolent direct action to send a powerful message to Governor Brown, demanding bold action at his Global Climate Action Summit?

Governor Jerry Brown is convening the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in San Francisco to promote his “real climate leadership” credentials on a global stage. But Jerry Brown’s expansion of dirty fossil fuel production, support of carbon trading markets and other incentives to oil, as well as gas and other polluting corporations, perpetuates climate change and decimates Indigenous communities and Native nations, communities of color and other working class peoples throughout California and around the world.

Such perverse subsidies for “climate capitalism” (allowing polluters to continue profiting on the creation of their pollution) will turn frontline communities into sacrifice zones for decades to come. Despite Brown’s efforts to show he is different from Trump and the forces of climate denial, his “climate leadership” promotes a similar corporate agenda – aimed at expanding the dig, burn, drive, dump industries, and the banks and tanks economy destroying our communities and the air, land and water we depend on.

Join us to stand in solidarity with Indigenous and frontline communities protecting Mother Earth, and cultivating real solutions to the twin crises of climate change and capitalism. Join us to demand that elected leaders like Governor Brown stand with our communities on the streets, and not the climate profiteers gathered inside.

For the sake of the climate, and to protect our communities, it’s time we collectively come together to say, “Enough!” It’s time to escalate this critical fight by taking direct action to make sure Governor Brown and other leaders get the message!

On September 13th, join us in mass action at the Global Climate Action Summit.

Our actions will be wrapped in prayer and committed with love for all we hold dear. We call for all peoples around the world to join us on the streets of San Francisco as we tell Jerry Brown and his friends that “real climate leaders” stand with people, not the pollution profiteers.
